On March 22, Jeremy Boreing, CEO and founder of the Daily Wire, tweeted that Candace Owens and the Daily Wire had ended their relationship. There’s been a lot of confusion surrounding the split, as well as plenty of misinformation. After several hours of research on X and watching plenty of content from other Daily Wire creators, I believe I can clear up some of the misconceptions. This is in no way an attack on Candace Owens or her character. The following is merely an explanation of the situation.
I urge anyone curious about the whole ordeal to go watch Andrew Klavan’s show which was released the same day that the separation was announced. For anyone too lazy to go watch said video, I will go through some of his main thoughts.
Andrew first addresses attacks that some on the right are throwing at the Daily Wire. Some believe that firing Candace Owens is an unjust attack on her freedom of speech. But he points out that the Daily Wire is not a phone company, nor is it a social media platform where everyone should be allowed to express their views, uninhibited. The Daily Wire is a publication. It is a publication that holds certain beliefs and values that separate it from the corrupt, left-wing mainstream media. Andrew makes the point that if he had come on his show and expressed that he suddenly changed his mind about abortion, and he believed that it is actually a moral and virtuous activity, it would not be in the Daily Wire’s interest to support his expression of that opinion. They would be promoting ideas that are at odds with the core of their very existence. And it is not a violation of Andrew’s freedom of speech because the Daily Wire has the right to control what their hosts say in their publication.
He also makes clear that he never really listened to Candace’s show because he believes she has some “silly views” about the moon landing being fake, or 9/11 being an inside job. He points out that these things are obviously untrue and it’s a bad look to claim otherwise.
“Then… we get to the Jew stuff,” says Andrew Klavan in an elegant segue to the most relevant topic. He correctly points out that the Left uses accusations of racism, bigotry, or hatred to separate people on the Right from their ability to tell the truth. This happens so often that anything the Left hurls these accusations at suddenly looks like the truth to people of the Right. Here in lies the danger. This allows people who do carry bigoted views to hide amongst those who tell the truth, and these people will say bigoted things under the guise of truth-telling just to anger the Left.
Andrew points out that Candace stood by Kanye West as he made gross remarks about Jews, but he shrugs it off, “so what? She has a mentally ill friend.” But then he lists some of the views she holds that he believes are dog whistles for antisemitic views.
Candace said on her show that the books that the Nazis burned were bad because they were “Socialist books” which insinuates that it was good for them to be burned.
Candace retweeted a post on X that said a Jew was drunk on Christian blood, which goes back to an ancient blood libel that says Jews eat Christian children.
Candace has referred to a “certain group of people in Hollywood corrupting the blacks and killing Michael Jackson.”
Andrew says that these are antisemitic remarks, and it’s not okay for Candace to then dismiss these things by saying she wasn’t talking about the WHOLE group, but just a select few people. However, all of these individual instances are not what the Right is torn about. There is a battle between those who back Candace and those who back the Daily Wire. What is the battle over? The phrase, “Christ is King.”
We’ll stick with Andrew’s opinions for now—mostly because I still have the tab with his show still open in my browser. Andrew says, “…when you use that phrase to mean God has abandoned His chosen people, the Jews, through whom He came into this world incarnate, you are quoting scripture like Satan does in the Bible.” and, “You are quoting scripture to your purposes, and that, to me, is specifically wicked.” Andrew is making the case that this phrase is being used now as an attack against Jews, broadly.
Jeremy Boreing has been taking a lot of heat from the Christian Right by pointing out that this phrase can be used as antisemitic (It is probably useful to point out that Andrew Klavan and Jeremy Boreing are both openly Christian). Jeremy has been defending himself and the Daily Wire X through several posts in response to people questioning how the phrase “Christ is King” could be perceived as antisemitic. Without going into too much detail about the lengthy post, Jeremy makes the case that “Christ is King” is not innately an antisemitic phrase, but the intention makes it so. Throwing this phrase at Jewish people to belittle them is where it becomes antisemitic. Jeremy also made it clear that people shouldn’t stop using the phrase just because some people are using it in negative ways.
To summarize, it appears that Candace Owens was dropped by the Daily Wire because she was (intentionally or unintentionally) promoting or furthering ideas that are at odds with what the company believes in. As much as some people may not like to hear it, it is probably for the best that Candace is on her own now—and it is not a violation of her free speech for the company to decide what they do or do not want to promote in their journal. As always, leave a comment or send me a message if you disagree or have questions! Thanks for reading!
